Which one is my child? — CAPS, Special Needs, Remedial and Cambridge explained
- CAPS
- The national curriculum, followed as written. Most SGEG families are here.
- Special Needs
- An adapted, differently paced programme for a child with a barrier to learning — autism, ADHD, sensory or intellectual. It changes how the whole curriculum is delivered, not just one subject.
- Remedial
- Focused help to close a specific gap — reading, spelling, handwriting or maths — usually alongside the normal curriculum, and usually for a set period rather than forever.
- Cambridge
- The international curriculum, for families who want an internationally recognised qualification.
The short difference: Special Needs changes how the whole curriculum is taught. Remedial closes a gap in one or two subjects, usually for a set period, while the rest carries on as normal. Plenty of families do both, and a child can move between them — you can change this any time in your settings.
Not sure? Pick the closest and say so in your first post. Somebody who has been through it will tell you, and SGEG can confirm what your child is actually enrolled for.
