Community guidelines
A short set of rules, and what happens when somebody breaks them. Worth two minutes before your first post.
What this place is for
Families schooling at home, asking each other real questions and answering them. CAPS, Special Needs, Remedial and Cambridge. The best thing you can do here is answer a question somebody else was too embarrassed to ask.
The rules
- Nothing identifying a child. No full names, no ages, no photographs, no school names, no addresses. A first name and a grade is plenty for someone to help you. This is the one rule we enforce hardest, and discussions are public pages that anyone can read.
- Be the kind of person a new parent would want to meet. Disagree with the advice, not the person. Somebody asking an obvious question is the whole point of this community existing.
- No selling. No promoting a business, no affiliate links, no recruiting. Naming a curriculum, a tutor or a product that genuinely helped you is not selling — that is the answer somebody came for.
- Do not speak for SGEG unless you do. Usernames that look official are refused automatically, and staff carry a visible job title. If you are guessing at what SGEG requires, say that you are guessing.
- Medical, legal and assessment advice: share experience, not instructions. “This is what our OT suggested” helps. “Stop the medication” does not.
- Post once. The same question in four spaces gets fewer answers, not more.
How moderation actually works
Every post and reply is read once by an AI classifier before it appears. It looks for spam, abuse, and anything that raises a child-safety concern.
It cannot delete anything and it never has the last word. The most it can do is hold a post for a person at SGEG to read. If it is unavailable, posts are held rather than published unchecked — we would rather be slow than sorry. A person makes every decision that affects a member.
If you break a rule
In order, and not skipping steps:
- A post is held or removed, with the reason recorded.
- Somebody talks to you. Most of what happens here is a misunderstanding, and most people correct it happily.
- Your account is suspended — reversibly, with a stated reason. This is the strongest thing we do. There is no permanent ban button, deliberately.
Anything involving the safety of a child skips straight to a person at SGEG and is dealt with immediately.
Posting is by recognition, not by signing up
Anyone can create an account and read everything. Posting and replying need a person at SGEG to recognise you as one of their families — or as a teacher or staff member. That is why the join form asks who you are.
A request that is declined always comes with a reason, because a decision you cannot see the reason for is one you cannot do anything about.
Your words stay yours
You keep the rights to what you write. By posting you allow SGEG to display it here and to keep showing it if you later close your account — shown as written by “Former member”. Other families rely on the answers here; removing a solved question takes it away from everyone who comes looking for it. If a specific post must go, ask and say why.
What we do not promise
This is a community of parents, not an advice service. Answers here are other families' experience and may be wrong, out of date, or not applicable to your child or your province. For anything binding — registration, assessment, exemptions — confirm it with SGEG or the relevant department. The community is provided as it is, and may occasionally be unavailable.
If you think we got it wrong
Email info@savinggraceeducation.co.za and somebody will look again. Moderation decisions are recorded with who made them and why, so there is something to review.
To be confirmed by SGEG: who hears an appeal against a suspension, and how long they have to respond.
